Returning Home: Life After The Military

I have had this question looming over my head, even causing some anxiety, about life after the military. My step-father, David Moorefield, is a retired U.S. marine of 23 years and CEO of DAK Resources. As he begins to share one of his stories while overseas, I try to envision the scenario, I try to feel the tension and put myself in his shoes. Making sure he called his grandmother every Sunday night just to say that he loved her, gunfire danced along the peaks of the base camp. After he is finished sharing the story he gives a slight chuckle because he knows it sounds illogical.

Wanting to understand more about life after the military, I did some research and found this article on forbes.com by Jonathan Kirk Davis, How Do Military Veterans Feel When They Return Home From Combat? My question exactly. So, I thought I would present this question to everyone: What is something we, people who haven't experienced the military or combat, don't know about veterans?

Yes, I have seen depictions of soldiers returning home in numerous war movies, which happens to be my favorite genre because of the personal stores they depict and the commanding emotions that result from that truth.

But, never having to risk my life or give up and basic necessities, I find myself trying to put myself in the shoes of a Navy, Army, Air Force, Marine, Coast Guard, National Guard veteran, without success.

Therefore, I am reaching out to those who have served, those who have sacrificed, those who have experienced hostility and strife to provide a glimpse into the lives of veterans returning home. What is something we don't know about veterans that would help us civilians better understand your experiences in coming home?

With the responses, I would like to create a list of 10 things we don't know about veterans and post to my blog. Please share your story by emailing me at jamie.shoff@dakresources.com

Helping Veterans Find Work in Jacksonville, FL

Jacksonville, Fl has the third largest military presence in the county with military installations such as Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Naval Station Mayport, Kings Bay Naval Base, Camp Blanding Joint Training Center, Naval Aviation Depot Jacksonville and Marine Corps Blount Island Command. Also, the recent relocation of the three navy ships, New York, Iwo Jima and Fort McHenry, to Mayport, will help provide a needed boost for the industrial base. Jacksonville also has the naval hospital and the ever growing Wounded Warrior Project headquarters.

According to the Marine Times, November 11, 2013, USAA and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Hiring Our Hero's project created a list "The Best Places for Veterans: Jobs". Surprisingly, Jacksonville, FL was not mentioned among the top 10 large, medium or small cities that are prime areas for veterans finding work. We need to become more active in helping our military veterans find employment.
